More Than a Cattery: How We Raise Our Kittens at Birch & Bramble

When people imagine a cattery, they often think of rows of cages or kittens kept in sterile environments. At Birch & Bramble, nothing could be further from the truth. We’re a small, intentional cattery where every kitten is raised underfoot, in a clean and loving home — never in confinement, never without affection, and always with their well-being as our highest priority.

We believe that how a kitten is raised makes all the difference in who they grow up to be. That’s why every whiskered soul we bring into the world is nurtured with hands-on care, gentle routines, and an environment full of enrichment and love.

From Day One: A Gentle Start to Life

Our care starts before kittens are even born. Our queens are cherished members of the family — not “breeding machines” — and receive the best nutrition, quiet birthing spaces, and veterinary care throughout their pregnancies. When it’s time to deliver, we’re right there to assist, ensuring both mother and babies are safe, warm, and comforted.

From the very first day, our kittens are monitored closely. We track their weight, ensure they’re nursing well, and gradually introduce them to soft touch and human interaction. It’s a slow, thoughtful process — no rushing, no forcing — just consistent, kind presence.

Why Socialization Matters

We take pride in raising well-socialized kittens who are confident, affectionate, and curious. This doesn’t happen by accident — it’s the result of daily interaction, exposure to household sounds, safe play with siblings, and regular handling by adults and older children.

By the time our kittens go to their forever homes, they’re used to being groomed, cuddled, and loved. They’re ready to join a family — not just survive in one.

We introduce them gradually to:

- Vacuum cleaners, soft music, and general household noise
- Gentle grooming routines (brushing, nail trimming, etc.)
- Toys of all textures and sounds
- Other cats and different environments within the home

This helps reduce stress during the transition and sets them up to be adaptable companions.

Health Comes First

Birch & Bramble kittens receive top-tier veterinary care. This includes vaccinations, deworming, and full health evaluations before they leave us. We also provide new families with starter care kits and guidance on diet, grooming, and transition tips.

We feed our cats premium wet food and incorporate supplemental raw feeding where appropriate. We never cut corners when it comes to what goes into their bodies or how they’re raised.
